The announcement was made over a year ago, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) which consists of 8 Eastern Africa member states, choose Djibouti to  establish an international arbitration center focused on resolving business disputes in the region.

 

Set up by IGAD and the Djibouti Chamber of Commerce, the startup meeting of the task force for establishing the IGAD Arbitration Centre is taking place on the 14th March 2016 in Djibouti.

Mr Benoit Le Bars, co-founder and partner, has been appointed with Mr Baiju Vasani, Partner in the Global Disputes Practice at Jones Day London and Washington DC, Co-Head of the legal task force, which is represented by the eight member countries (Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Eritrea and Uganda) and thirteen international arbitration experts.

 

The new center is aimed at providing private mechanisms for resolving commercial disputes, improving the business environment, and bolstering investor confidence in the region.
